West Frankfort school evacuated due to "fire issue"

FRANKLIN COUNTY - A West Frankfort school was evacuated on Tuesday morning due to an issue that prompted a fire department response.

Central Junior High School, located on Cherry Street in West Frankfort, was evacuated around 8 a.m. this morning.

At least three engines with the West Frankfort Fire Department responded to the scene. According to the school district, all students inside the building removed to the Frankfort Intermediate School gymnasium.

District officials are still assessing the situation, and all children are safe, according to the district. Parents will be notified if students need to be picked up.

Per West Frankfort Fire Chief Derek Sailliez:

The West Frankfort Fire Department is investigating an issue with an HVAC unit at the Central Junior High School. All students are secure and there is no threat to their safety. Fire officials are investigating the issue. A decision on continuing with classes for the remainder of the day is pending and more information will be sent when available. Again, the situation is secure and there is no cause for alarm.
