WILLIAMSON COUNTY - As the upcoming school year quickly approaches, two local school districts have made the decision to make face coverings optional for students and administration.

Both Marion Unit #2 and Johnston City Unit #1 will be complying with the CDC's recommendation for schools across the country, which only requires masks for vaccinated individuals, among other rules.

However, local school districts must follow COVID-19 protocols from the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Board of Education before allowing students back into the classroom. Therefore, mask policies could change at any time if needed.

Both school districts are also planning a return to a full 5-day in-person learning schedule next month.

WFCN News will be keeping you updated as additional school districts release their plans for the upcoming school year.
