JACKSON COUNTY - A Carbondale man will be serving 15 years in prison for beating a 3 year-old child in 2019.

Clayton Ellet, 26, of Carbondale, pled guilty to Aggravated Battery of a Child, a Class X felony, which resulted in great bodily harm.

Ellet received a sentence of fifteen years in the Illinois Department of Corrections followed by a three year period of Mandatory Supervised Release.

The incident occurred on November 29, 2019. The 3-year-old child was admitted to the Carbondale Memorial Hospital with bruising to his body and a brain bleed.

The child had to undergo emergency surgery for the brain bleed prior to being transported to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. It was determined by physicians that the injuries the child received were from non-accidental trauma.

Through the investigation, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department investigators learned that Ellet was acting as the sole caregiver for the child when he delivered three blows directly to the top of the child’s head, which caused the child to immediately begin seizure-like activity.

Ellet was arrested on December 1, 2020, and has remained incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail.
