12 horses seized after alleged mistreatment in Saline County

HARRISBURG - The Saline County Sheriff's Office has seized a dozen horses for alleged mistreatment.
According to a news release, James Kevin Griffith of Harrisburg was not providing sufficient food, water and care for the animals, and had previously been cited by the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
Earlier this year, in July, a dead foal was located on Griffith's property. resulting in twelve animals being seized by the Sheriff's Office.
Saline County State's Attorney Molly W. Kasiar filed a petition for forfeiture in the Circuit Court of Saline County and moved to have the horses forfeited pursuant to the Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act. On September 16, 2022, the animals were permanently forfeited to Saline County by virtue of an Order entered by Circuit Court of Saline County.
The animals are being cared for at a local facility and the Sheriff's Office is working to rehome the animals.
